Important Information Regarding the 5th Grade Field Study to Driftwood

Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th Grade Gifted Students,

Our field trip to Driftwood Education Center is NEXT Friday, February 23rd. Driftwood is situated on St. Simon’s Island, one of Georgia’s barrier islands, and is surrounded by miles of salt marsh and acres of maritime forest. Your child will have the opportunity to learn about marine biology, salt marsh ecology, reptiles, low country cultures, and other science-related areas.

We will be leaving from Chimney Lakes (9353 Staples Mill Dr.) promptly at 7:00 a.m. Please have your child at school between 6:45-6:55 a.m. We will meet in Mr. Haas’s classroom. Please park in the small parking lot in front of the school next to the large playground, and enter through the door on the side of the building next to the playground. We ask that you please walk your child to the room rather than drop them off. We will arrive back at Chimney Lakes between 4:45-5:00 p.m. You will sign your child out in Mr. Haas’s room. Please be on time! If your child is in Extended Day at Chimney Lakes, please let know so we can send them on their way.

What to Bring: Please make sure that your child comes dressed appropriately for outdoor activities (closed-toed shoes only). Please bring a bagged lunch, as no cafeteria lunches will be provided. All lunch items must be disposable other than a water bottle if desired (no lunchboxes or plastic containers, please). Students may bring books, drawing paper, etc. to occupy their time while on the bus.

What NOT to Bring: Candy, gum, food, electronic games, or anything else not allowed in school. Students may bring cell phones to use only to contact parents/guardians if needed while we are away. Cell phones may not be used to occupy time while on the bus, or to take pictures.

If you need to reach us during the day, you may email us or message us via the Remind app (text @chimneylak to 81010 to join). We are not sure how the cell service will be on the island, so please call Driftwood at 912-638-3849 in the event of an emergency.

Thank you,
Mr. Haas and Mrs. Medley
